Effects of Geographical Diversification on Corporate Performance in Global Terminal Operators: A Panel Regression Analysis

본 연구에서는 글로벌 컨테이너터미널 운영사(GTO)의 지리적 다각화가 기업경영성과에 미치는 영향을 정량적 수치를 활용하여 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 GTO 11개사의 8개년 시계열 패널데이터를 활용하여 패널회귀분석을 진행하였다. 분석 결과, 첫째, GTO들의 지리적 다각화 전략은 기업별 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 둘째, GTO들의 대륙간 다각화는 기업경영성과 ROE와 2차형 비선형 관계가 있으며 초기 단계에는 부정적이나, 일정 수준 이상에서는 긍정적인 영향이 나타나는 것을 확인하였다. 셋째, GTO의 개발도상국 지역 진출은 기업경영성과 ROE에 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 GTO들은 장기적인 관점에서 대륙 간 다각화와 개발도상국으로의 지리적 다각화에 투자함으로써 규모의 경제 효과를 극대화하고 운영 효율성을 향상시킬 필요가 있음을 시사한다.

This study examined geographical diversification of Global Container Terminal Operator (GTO) and quantified it into an index to analyze its impact on corporate performance. Using panel regression analysis on an eight-year time series dataset from 11 GTOs, empirical results revealed the following. First, GTOs exhibited significant differences in their geographic portfolio strategies. Second, there was a non-linear relationship between intercontinental geographic diversification and Return on Equity (ROE), where the impact was initially negative but became positive beyond a certain level of diversification. Third, GTOs' expansion into developing regions positively influenced their ROE. These findings suggest that GTO should focus on long-term geographic diversification strategies to achieve economies of scale and improve operational efficiency, rather than solely concentrating on short-term performance.
