Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine the main effect of media multitasking on the self-regulation of media use. Additionally, it aims to verify whether the perception of the harmfulness (bad language, sexuality, and violence) of media content moderates this effect. Design/Methodology/Approach - This study used 2023 children’s media use survey data that responded to a question about media multitasking. To analyze the main effect of media multitasking, regression analysis was performed through SPSS, and the moderating effect analysis was conducted using Process Macro Model 1. Findings - Media multitasking had a negative effect on the self-regulation of media use, and the moderating effect of harmfulness on this main effect was significant. Specifically, in the high media multitasking group, there was no significant difference based on the level of content harmfulness. However, in the low media multitasking group, the difference between low and high levels of content harmfulness was significant. Research Implications - Based on the results of this study, it can be suggested that media and content-related companies should encourage media multitasking for children’s media use. In terms of corporate social responsibility, it can be suggested that a strategy should be prepared to actively guide matters related to content harmfulness so that appropriate media use can be observed. In addition, it can be suggested that in terms of policy, the types and levels of the content harmfulness on various media (YouTube, Instagram, etc.) should be guided to users in advance to establish a proper culture of media use.
