Purpose - The aim of this research is to study avenues to improve the efficiency of free trade zones by utilizing 4th industrial revolution technologies, and to find positive effects on Korean trade in 2025. Design/Methodology/Approach - Through the analysis of a variance decomposition of the VAR model, the study conducted a test on the relative size of the influence of the overall export volume growth rate of the US and the US free trade zone export volume growth rate on the overall export volume growth rate of the US. Although the influence of the US free trade zone export volume growth rate on the change in the overall export volume growth rate of the US over time is not large, it appears to be gradually increasing. Korea needs to actively take an interest in these technologies, and actively attract companies with leading overseas technologies while reducing costs. Findings - Free trade zones can create jobs by activating the economy through trade during economic recessions. However, it is also true that the advantages of free trade zones are partially offset by the expansion of FTAs. Research Implications - Looking at cases of the activation of free trade zones utilizing 4th industrial revolution technologies, AI and IoT were found to have the widest range of utilization among the surveyed subjects, followed by big data. In addition, blockchain, self-driving vehicles, smart logistics centers or management systems, digital logistics systems or cargo tracking systems, drones, and automated cranes are being utilized well among 4th industrial revolution technologies.
