Yeats and Heaney: Two Diverging Paths of Poeticizing

I am compelled to think that Heaney’s attitude to language is the same as Yeats’s: “a new bud on an old bough.” Yeats has been highly attentive to the past: old master poets: Spenser, Shakespeare, Donne, Thomas Gray, Blake, Shelley, Coleridge. Not only poetry but also other writing inspired him. And in a literary history, when a work has been inspired by a particular work, it is easy to make a comparison, in a convincing way. How could you possibly compare, for example, Leonardo da Vinci and W. B. Yeats?
