예이츠는 인간의 정체, 존재의 이유, 삶과 죽음과 같은 궁극적인 물음에 일평생 세계의 어느 철인 못지않게 사색과 탐색을 거듭하였다. 본고에서는 인간이 지상에서 살아가지만 피안의 실재를 향한 치열한 탐색을 예이츠의 시작품을 통해서 살펴보고 그의 궁극적인 물음에 대해 그리스도의 은총을 입어 인간의 구원에 헌신한 중세의 아퀴나스의 신학적 입장을 들어본다. 본고의 결론은 사물의 실재가 공허하지만 인간의 내면에 엄연히 존재하기에 만물의 제작자인 하나님이 실재하시며 이에 대한 동의 유무는 어디까지나 자유의지에 의한 선택의 문제라고 주장한다.
Yeats had gone through the research and thought on identity of human, cause of existence, and life and death. In this paper rather we look into some poems of Yeats’s to head for the presence of Heaven and then seek for the answers of the ultimate questions surrounding human affairs that the poet wondered about through the remarks of St. Thomas Aquinas. This paper argues that though the Presence of Thing seems to be hollow it actually resides in human mind as knowing it through religions and superstitions everywhere to be possible to sense the existence of God.
