Study on Standardization of Terminology for Basic Dental Hygiene Courses

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to standardize terminology in basic dental hygiene courses to improve learners' understanding and promote communication between professions. Methods: The index of textbooks for basic dental hygiene courses in 82 universities nationwide was selected by subject. The study was conducted in three stages. The number of indexes for each selected subject was 1,522 for oral anatomy, 1,482 for oral physiology, 1,403 for oral pathology, 1,391 for oral histogenetics, 429 for dental morphology, and 1,692 for oral microbiology, a total of 7,919 words. Results: A total of 594 standardized terms were selected. 527 words from oral anatomical science, 7 from oral physiology, 14 from oral pathology, 19 from oral histoeogenesis, 19 from dental morphology, and 8 from oral microbiology were selected. And a total of 59 old terms(Chinese character) were recommended for dental morphology and oral microbiology. Conclusions: This study is meaningful in attempting to standardize dental hygiene terminology based on the recommended terms, and standardization of dental hygiene terminology will contribute to improving the quality of education and strengthening the capabilities of experts.
