This study focuses on the integration of Augmented Reality (AR) technology with mural education, aiming to address the limitations of traditional mural teaching methods. After reviewing the development of AR technology and its current applications in the education field, the study highlights the significance and challenges of mural education. It delves into the implementation of an interactive visual layer design, including technical principles, creative processes, and integration methods. Using the Digital Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Fahai Temple as case studies, the paper demonstrates specific AR application examples. Evaluations reveal that AR technology significantly enhances audience understanding and aesthetic appreciation of murals. In the Digital Dunhuang Mogao Caves project, over 70% of viewers reported a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural context of murals, while approximately 80% noted improved aesthetic experiences; similar positive feedback was observed in the Fahai Temple mural project. Based on these findings, the study proposes recommendations for improvement and outlines prospects for future development, paving a new path for mural education.
