A Study of Furniture Design that Reflects the Cultural Tendencies of Modern Society : Focusing on the Coexistence of Collectivism and Individualism

This study aims to understand the characteristics of collectivist and individualist cultural tendencies that coexist in modern society and propose furniture designs that explore the possibility of communication between people with different cultural tendencies. In particular, we analyzed various aspects of cultural tendencies that appear in rapid social change and developed furniture designs that promote mutual understanding and respect based on this. This study examined the characteristics of collectivism and individualism and their coexistence in contemporary society through literature research, and analyzed the expression methods of contemporary artworks that deal with communication between different cultural tendencies. Based on this, a furniture design utilizing corroded metal as the main material was developed. The design expresses the process of change and harmony between different cultures through the natural process of corrosion, and aims to induce natural communication and interaction between users through variable structures and interactive elements. As a result of the study, we found that furniture design can be an effective medium to promote understanding of different cultural tendencies and provide an opportunity for positive communication. In particular, the various patterns and textures created by the corrosion process expressed the diversity of cultural preferences, while also suggesting the possibility of coexistence and harmony through changes over time. This study is significant in that it presents a new design methodology to visualize the diversity of cultural tendencies in contemporary society and promote mutual understanding.
