This study examines the concept of ‘blending’ as a distinct approach to combining disparate elements, contrasting it with more commonly referenced and utilized terms like ‘fusion’ in the context of art and design. Specifically, by focusing on blending, the study explores how disparate elements can merge while preserving their unique characteristics, and by analyzing blend words (portmanteau) and their formation, it establishes a theoretical foundation for applying the blending approach to furniture design. To this end, the research collects and reviews a wide range of literature to investigate design approaches that effectively express formal heterogeneity, and through and in-depth analysis of real-world applications, it examines the unique and characteristics of each work and the intentions of the artists. Based on these findings, it assesses the feasibility of the proposed ideas and explores potential directions for expanding them into a series of tangible furniture pieces. Ultimately, the research aims to present a new formal approach to constructing forms that reflects the way of combining elements and thematic awareness required in contemporary society, where boundaries between different subjects, territories, areas, and regions are becoming increasingly blurred and complex, while conveying the concept of blending.
