This study aims to classify and analyze art furniture from a new materialist perspective and propose a novel classification and analysis system that overcomes the limitations of traditional form- and function-based classification methods. New materialism conceptualizes matter not as a passive object but as an active agent that continuously interacts with humans and the environment to generate meaning. Accordingly, this study presents a multidimensional classification and analysis system that evaluates art furniture based on three key analytical elements: Material, Interaction, and Context. This study critically examines the limitations of existing classification and analysis systems and demonstrates that the proposed new materialist framework provides a more in-depth explanation of the meaning and role of art furniture. Furthermore, representative art furniture cases are analyzed to verify the effectiveness of this classification and analysis system. The findings confirm that the proposed framework enables a more dynamic and relational understanding of art furniture, moving beyond static categorization. To systematically analyze art furniture, this study employs the Material-Interaction-Context Analysis Framework. First, Material Analysis explores the physical properties of art furniture, the potential for material transformation over time, and the agency of matter as it interacts with specific environments. Second, Interaction Analysis examines the relationships between the creator, materials, and users, assessing how users engage with the furniture. Third, Contextual Analysis investigates how art furniture embodies cultural, social, and environmental narratives and its connection to historical developments. The classification and analysis system proposed in this study can be applied in various domains, including design research, museum exhibition planning, digital archiving, and practical design development. By integrating a new materialist approach, this study shifts the focus from conventional form-centered research to an understanding of art furniture as an entity embedded in dynamic relationships among materials, users, and the environment. Additionally, this study contributes to expanding the interpretative possibilities of art furniture by linking contemporary design discourses, such as sustainability and interactive design, with a new materialist perspective. The proposed framework serves as a foundational reference for future studies utilizing new materialist methodologies.
