This study explores the analysis of the formative elements of the traditional Sabangtakja and the development of modern design interpretations using Generative AI. The Sabangtakja, a traditional Korean four-sided open shelving unit, embodies unique structural characteristics such as an open framework, multi-layered shelving, four-pillar support, elongated vertical proportions, base elevation (Jokdae), and traditional joinery techniques. These elements reflect both functional and aesthetic principles deeply rooted in Korean cultural heritage. Through an AI-driven design process, this research examines the potential of digitally transforming the traditional Sabangtakja while preserving its fundamental structural integrity. By leveraging Generative AI models, various design iterations were explored, leading to the derivation of a contemporary reinterpretation that maintains traditional elements while integrating advanced fabrication techniques such as 3D printing. The final selected design incorporates an organic, sculptural form, replacing conventional straight lines with fluid curvatures, thus bridging traditional craftsmanship and futuristic aesthetics. The study further demonstrates how 3D printing technology enhances design flexibility, allowing for precise fabrication of intricate curved structures that would be challenging to achieve through conventional woodworking techniques. Additionally, sustainable bio-polymer materials were employed, offering an environmentally conscious approach to furniture production. The results highlight the effectiveness of Generative AI in digitally optimizing traditional furniture design and suggest that this approach can serve as a methodological foundation for future studies in digital cultural heritage preservation and modern furniture innovation. Future research directions include further AI-based design refinement, prototype development for real-world application, and an empirical evaluation of user experience and functionality. This study contributes to the field of contemporary furniture design by providing a framework for integrating AI-driven methodologies into the reinterpretation of traditional craftsmanship, ensuring both cultural continuity and design innovation.
