개신교인의 용서(forgiveness)에 대한 인식조사 결과와 기독교적 용서 제안

Survey Results on Protestant Christians’ Perceptions of Forgiveness and Proposal for Christian Forgiveness

사람이 공동체를 형성하여 생활하다 보면 예상치 못한 다양한 문제들이 일어나게 된다. 개인과 개인 사이에서 집단과 집단 사이에서 늘 이런 분쟁은 끊이질 않는다. 공동체의 질서를 헤치는 사건 사고가 이어지는 이유다. 그것이 너의 문제가 아니라 나의 문제가 될 때 당사자 간의 관계는 단절을 넘어 때로는 파국을 맞기도 한다. 신앙공동체도 예외가 아니다. 여기에서 우리의 관심을 끄는 주제는 바로 ‘용서’(forgiveness) 문제다. 이러한 배경에서 본 논문은 크게 두 가지 목적을 가지고 있다. 첫째는 용서의 가치를 매우 중요하게 강조하는 개신교(改新敎 Protestantism)와 개신교인들은 용서에 대해 어떤 인식과 경험을 가지고 있는지 설문조사를 통해 확인하고, 그 특징을 분석하는 것이다. 이를 위해 필자는 2024년도 갈등과 용서 및 화해에 대한 개신교인 인식조사의 주요 결과를 제시하여 설명하고자 한다. 둘째는 한국 개신교인의 용서 인식 확립을 위한 토대로서 기독교적 용서가 무엇인지를 제시하는 것이다. 이 부분에서는 필자는 성서에 등장하는 용서 장면을 살펴보고, 계속해서 기독교 문화해석학의 관점에서 용서의 주체, 의무로서 용서, 용서의 무한성 차원을 하나씩 규명하여 기독교적 용서 개념을 제안하고자 한다. 이러한 일련의 논의를 통해서 우리는 용서에 대한 성서의 분명한 가르침을 확인할 수 있을 것이며, 개신교인의 용서 경험과 신앙과 용서의 연관성을 제대로 파악하고, 나아가 용서하지 못해 고통받는 피해자에 대한 관심의 필요성을 인식하게 될 것이다.

When people form communities and live together, various unforeseen problems arise. Conflicts between individuals and between groups are continuous, and this is why incidents that disrupt the order of the community keep occurring. The Christian community is no exception. The topic that draws our attention here is the issue of ‘forgiveness.’ Against this background, this paper has two main objectives. First, it aims to investigate, through a survey, the perceptions and experiences of forgiveness among Protestant Christians, who place great importance on the value of forgiveness, and analyze the characteristics of these perceptions. To achieve this, the author intends to present and explain the key results of the 2024 survey on Protestant Christians’ perceptions of conflict, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Second, the paper seeks to lay the groundwork for establishing the perception of forgiveness among Korean Protestants by defining what Christian forgiveness is. In this section, the author will examine instances of forgiveness in the Bible and, from the perspective of Christian cultural hermeneutics, identify the subject of forgiveness, forgiveness as an obligation, and the infinite nature of forgiveness, ultimately proposing a concept of Christian forgiveness. Through this series of discussions, we will be able to confirm the clear biblical teachings on forgiveness, properly understand the connection between Protestant Christians’ experiences with forgiveness and their faith, and recognize the need to pay attention to victims who suffer from their inability to forgive.
