A study on the development of in-depth diagnostic tool for students at risk in English basic academic proficiency

It is essential to implement effective measures to identify students at risk of inadequate basic English skills early and prevent their learning difficulties. This study conducted a research to develop In-Depth Diagnostic Tool for English Early Reading Ability(IT-ERA) to measure elementary school English learners’ early reading abilities. The research followed the four stages of development research: analysis, plan, design, and reflection, and developed the diagnostic tool in two phases. First, IT-ERA was created to supplement existing basic skills diagnostic tools by focusing on early reading abilities, including alphabet recognition, phonemic awareness, phonics, word reading, and sentence reading. In the second phase, the tool was applied to 60 elementary students in grades 4 to 6 to compare the diagnostic results with those of basic skills assessments. The analysis confirmed that IT-ERA effectively identifies students at risk of inadequate English skills that previous tools did not detect. Based on these findings, the study emphasizes the need for early diagnosis and customized remedial education for students lacking basic skills.
