The meaning of aesthetic sensitivity competency in elementary English education based on the 2022 revised curriculum

The 2022 revised curriculum is a competency-based curriculum that aims to educate students to develop the competencies required by the future society. This study explores the concept of aesthetic sensitivity competency which was first introduced in English language teaching, and provides directions on how they can be applied and assessed in elementary English classes. The findings of the study are summarized as follows. First, aesthetic sensitivity competency can be applied to a wider range of subjects, as it includes not only artistic competency such as enjoyment of art based on cultural knowledge and sensitivity, but also cultural competency such as openness and respect for diverse values and empathetic attitudes towards others. Second, an analysis of the achievement standards in the elementary English curriculum showed that the reception domain included achievement standards related to aesthetic sensitivity competency, but there were no clear achievement standards in the production domain. Third, in order to foster aesthetic sensitivity competency in elementary English classes, teachers can integrate English and other subjects through curriculum restructuring and apply literary reading and various follow-up activities. Based on these results, suggestions for future research and education are presented.
