유대인의 팔레스타인 강점 배경에는 현대 서구 제국주의의 어두운 그림자가 깊게 배어 있다. 유대인들의 팔레스타인 정착 운동을 불러일으킨 시온주의 운동의 태동이 서구 제국주의 시대의 유산이며, 동시에 현재 이스라엘의 팔레스타인 강점을 뒷받침하고 있는 배경 역시 서구 제국주의라는 점에서 그렇다. 따라서 현재 팔레스타인인들의 투쟁은 언제나 제국주의가 만들어 놓은 구조들과 충돌할 수밖에 없는 요인들을 지니고 있다. 여기서 가장 먼저 해명되어야 할 것이 시온주의 운동이다. 시온주의 운동은 19세기 유럽 자본주의 위기의 산물이었다. 선진 서유럽의 유대인들은 대개 자본주의적 체제에 동화되어 있었지만, 후진 동유럽에 자본주의가 침투함에 따라 봉건 경제 구조에 의존하고 있던 유대인들은 위협을 받았을 뿐 아니라 동시에 자본주의의 위기가 전개되면서 발생한 대중의 분노를 무마하기 위한 ‘희생양’으로서 공격 표적이 되었다. 그 반작용으로 형성된 유대 민족주의의 완성 형태가 바로 시온주의였다. 오늘날 시온주의는 단순히 종교적 열망을 나타내는 것이 아니라 이스라엘의 팔레스타인 점령을 정당화하는 정치 이데올로기로서 성격을 분명히 하고 있다. 이 논문은 이스라엘의 팔레스타인 점령을 정당화하는 이데올로기로서 시온주의가 과연 역사적·신학적 정당성을 지닐 수 있는지 비판적으로 검토하면서 팔레스타인의 해방을 전망한다. 이 과제는 신학적이자 동시에 역사적 성찰로서 성격을 지니고 있다. 이 논문은 먼저 제국주의 유산으로서 팔레스타인 문제의 성격을 다룬다. 이어 시온주의를 형성한 유대 민족 귀환 신화와 기독교 신학의 공모 관계를 다루며 그 대안으로서 팔레스타인 해방을 지향하는 신학을 소개한다. 더불어 팔레스타인 저항의 역사를 되돌아보며 실천적 차원에서 팔레스타인 해방의 전망을 모색한다.

Behind the Jewish dominance of Palestine lies the dark shadow of modern Western imperialism. In the same way that the Zionist movement, which gave rise to the Jewish settlement of Palestine, is a legacy of the Western imperialist era, so too is Israel’s current dominance of Palestine. Therefore, the current Palestinian struggle has always been characterized by factors that put it in conflict with the structures of imperialism. The first thing to note here is the Zionist movement. The Zionist movement was a product of the European capitalist crisis of the 19th century. Jews in developed Western Europe were largely assimilated into the capitalist system. On the other hand, Jews who were dependent on the backward feudal economies of Eastern Europe, were not only threatened by the penetration of capitalism, but were simultaneously targeted as “scapegoats” to deflect popular anger as the capitalist crisis unfolded. Zionism was the Jewish nationalism that formed as a reaction. Today, Zionism is not simply a religious aspiration, but a political ideology that justifies Israel’s occupation of Palestine. This paper critically examines the historical and theological legitimacy of Zionism as an ideology that justifies Israel’s occupation of Palestine and looks forward to the liberation of Palestine. This assignment is simultaneously a theological and historical reflection. This paper first addresses the nature of the Palestinian question as a legacy of imperialism. It then addresses the complicity of Christian theology with the myth of Jewish return that shaped Zionism and introduces an alternative theology of Palestinian liberation. It also looks back at the history of Palestinian resistance and explores the prospects for Palestinian liberation on a practical level.
