해양소설의 ‘리얼리티 충실성’ 개념으로 읽는 헤밍웨이 『노인과 바다』 : 천금성이 바라본 산티아고를 중심으로

Reading Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea through the Lens of “Reality Fidelity” in Maritime Novels: Focusing on Santiago from Chun Geum-seong’s Perspective

어니스트 헤밍웨이의 『노인과 바다』는 1954년 노벨 문학상을 수상하며 문학적 가치를 인정받았지만, 체험문학의 관점에서 분석할 때 해양 환경과 어로 행위의 재현이 실제 경험과는 상당한 괴리감을 드러낸다. 본 연구는 천금성의 해양소설과 비교하여 『노인과 바다』의 체험적 사실성과 문학적 재현의 경계를 고찰한다. 특히 산티아고라는 인물을 중심으로 그의 고독한 항해와 어로 행위가 인간의 존엄성과 불굴의 의지를 상징하는 방식을 분석하며, 이를 생존과 도전이라는 철학적 함의로 재해석한다. 천금성은 해양소설에서 ‘체험적 진실성’이 필수적임을 강조하며, 이를 기반으로 산티아고의 행동과 철학을 비판적으로 검토한다. 또한 헤밍웨이의 세밀한 묘사와 상징적 서사가 체험적 사실성과의 괴리를 드러내는 지점을 분석하며, 체험문학의 본질적 역할과 가치를 논의한다. 본 연구는 산티아고와 돈키호테의 동질성을 통해 이상주의와 고독을 조명하며, 인간 본질에 대한 통찰을 제시한다. 이를 통해 『노인과 바다』를 새로운 시각에서 해석하고 해양소설의 체험성과 문학적 함의를 균형 있게 탐구하고자 한다.

The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954, earning recognition for its literary value. However, from the perspective of experiential literature, its depiction of the marine environment and fishing activities reveals significant discrepancies from actual experiences. This study examines the boundary between experiential authenticity and literary representation in The Old Man and the Sea, comparing it with Chun Geum-seong’s maritime novels. Focusing on the character Santiago, the analysis explores how his solitary voyage and fishing activities symbolize human dignity and indomitable will, reinterpreting these elements through the philosophical implications of survival and challenge. Chun Geum-seong emphasizes the necessity of “experiential authenticity” in maritime novels, providing a critical framework to scrutinize Santiago’s actions and philosophy. Additionally, this study analyzes points where Hemingway’s detailed descriptions and symbolic narratives diverge from experiential authenticity, discussing the essential role and value of experiential literature. By highlighting the parallels between Santiago and Don Quixote, it sheds light on themes of idealism and solitude, offering insights into human nature. This research aims to reinterpret The Old Man and the Sea from a fresh perspective, balancing the experiential authenticity and literary significance of maritime novels.
