임매(任邁)의 ｢환처(宦妻)｣ 번역 및 주석

Translation and Commentary on Hwancheo

｢환처｣는 조선 후기 임매가 쓴 야담 계열의 단편소설이다. 주인공 할멈은 일찍 부모를 잃고 외숙모에게 양육되다가 열여섯의 나이에 내시의 아내로 팔려 가게 된다. 거세된 남편에게서 부부의 즐거움을 얻지 못한 할멈은 재물을 챙겨 가출하게 되고 길에서 만난 승려를 겁박하여 남편으로 삼은 뒤 행복한 삶을 살게 된다는 내용이다. ｢환처｣는 웃음을 자아내는 상황이 일인칭 독백으로 생생하게 전달된다는 점, 여성 주인공이 배우자를 적극적으로 선택하는 주체성을 보인다는 점, 조선 후기의 세태가 구체적으로 형상화되었다는 점 등에서 문학적 가치를 인정받았다. 구어체에 가까운 비속한 표현과 용사를 중심으로 한 전아한 표현이 적절하게 활용되었다는 점에서 글쓰기 교육의 자료로도 손색이 없다. 강독과 연구의 자료로 활용하기 위해서는 원문에 대한 충실한 번역과 함께 문맥을 이해하는 데 필요한 관련 정보를 자세히 전달할 필요가 있다. 이에 따라 ｢환처｣를 현대 한국어로 번역하는 동시에 한문 원전으로서의 가치가 잘 드러나도록 자세한 주석을 붙이고자 하였다. 자구의 사전적 의미뿐 아니라 유사한 용례를 덧붙여 한문 학습에도 도움이 되도록 하였다.

Hwancheo[宦妻, the wife of eunuch] is a short story in the Yadam[野談, folk tales] style written by Im, Mae[林邁, 1711~1779] in the late Joseon Dynasty. The main character lost her parents at a young age and was raised by her maternal aunt before being sold to become the wife of a eunuch at the age of sixteen. The story is about an old woman who, unable to receive marital pleasure from her castrated husband, runs away from home with all her belongings, threatens a monk she meets on the street, takes him as her husband, and begins a new life. Hwancheo has been recognized for its literary value in that situations that evoke laughter are vividly conveyed through first-person monologues, that the female protagonist shows independence in actively choosing a spouse, and that the social image of the late Joseon Dynasty is embodied in detail. It is also an excellent material for writing education in that it appropriately utilizes writing methods of classical Chinese language centered on colloquial expressions and Yongsa[用事]. The purpose of this article is to help you use Hwancheo as a material for academic reading and research. Accordingly, we attempted to translate Hwancheo into modern Korean language and at the same time add detailed annotations to the wording of the text to clearly reveal its value as an original classical Chinese text. In addition to explaining the meaning of the phrases, similar usage examples were added to help in learning classical Chinese language.
