Characteristics and Symbolic Meaning of Baekje Wide Shaped Iron Spears in the 5th Century

본 연구는 5세기 백제 광형철모를 대상으로 그 형태적 특성과 출토 맥락을 분석해 성격과 상징적 의미를 규명하는 것에 목적이 있다. 광형철모는 한정된 시기에 특정 지역에서만 확인되며 광형의 신부 폭을 가진 독특한 형태로 나타난다. 이는 동시대의 기능적으로 개량된 세형철모와 뚜렷이 구별되며, 분포와 부장 양상에서 일정한 정형성을 보여 특수한 성격을 가진 위세품으로 해석될 가능성이 있다. 벽화 자료와의 비교 및 특정 속성들의 조합을 검토해 창의 운용 방식을 분석하였으며 그 성격을 군사적 성격과 관련된 의장물로 보았다. 특히 백제 중앙과 관련되어 해석될 여지가 있는데 이는 광형철모가 짧은 시기 동안 예외 없이 부장 유물의 수준이 매우 탁월한 지방 거점 고분이나 전략적 요충지에만 분포하는 양상을 통해서도 방증된다. 따라서 광형철모는 실전 무기로 사용되기보다는 군사적 상징에 대한 관념을 가시적으로 표현한 결과물이며 당시 백제의 중앙과 지방 간의 정치·군사적 역학관계를 추정할 수 있는 하나의 자료로 판단된다.

This study aims to analyze the morphological characteristics and burial contexts of Baekje's 5th-century Wide-Shaped Iron Spears to elucidate their function and symbolic significance. These spears are uniquely characterized by their wide spear width and distinct shapes, found only in specific regions and periods. They are clearly distinguishable from contemporaneous streamlined iron spears designed for practical use and show consistent patterns in distribution and burial practices, suggesting their interpretation as special prestige items. By comparing them with mural paintings and examining specific attributes, this study identifies the spears as military ceremonial objects associated with spear usage. In particular, its connection to the Baekje central authority is suggested, which is further supported by the fact that Wide-Shaped Iron Spears were exclusively found in high-status tombs at regional centers or strategic locations during a short period, consistently accompanied by outstanding burial goods. Thus, the spears are considered not as functional weapons but as visual representations of shared military symbolism, providing valuable insights into the political and military dynamics between the Baekje central government and regional powers.
