Objective: This study examines the influence of single parents and children’s leisure activities on internet and smartphone overdependence, focusing on the moderated mediation effect of parenting stress by single-mother versus single-father families. Methods: Utilizing Model 4 and Model 7 of the PROCESS Macro method, total, mediation, and moderated mediation effects were analyzed. Results: Single parents and children’s leisure activities did not have a total effect on internet and smartphone overdependence. A partial mediation effect of parenting stress on the influence of leisure activities on internet and smartphone overdependence was found. The mediation effect of parenting stress was moderated by single-mother versus single-father families. The effect was more pronounced for single-mother families than single-father families. Conclusions: Diverse strategies to deal with the internet and smartphone overdependence of elementary school children in single-parent families are discussed.
