코끼리 유배지 장도(獐島)를 둘러싼 관광 스토리텔링 개발방안

A Study on the Development Plan for Tourism Storytelling Around Jangdo, the Exile Island of Elephants

본 연구는 전라도 장도로 유배를 온 코끼리에 관한 역사적 사실이 진짜인가와 장도의 정확한 현재 위치가 어디인지 그리고 ‘코끼리 유배지’를 중심으로 한 관광 스토리텔링 개발방안을 제시하는 것을 주요 목적으로 하였다. 관련 문헌과 단행본, 정기간행물, 선행연구, 신문기사 등의 문헌 고찰을 통해 역사적 사실임을 밝히고 현재의 위치가 전남 여수시 장도임을 확인했다. 그런데도 전남 보성군 장도의 경우 ‘코끼리 섬’이라는 관광 스토리텔링을 더욱 강화할 필요가 있음도 역설했다. 더불어 관광 스토리텔링 개발방안을 위해 전제 조건과 고려 사항을 도출하여 전제 조건으로는 첫째, 종합적이고 체계적이며 사실적인 역사 연구의 중요성, 둘째, 지역사회 참여가 선행되어야 함, 셋째, 관광객 수용 인프라 및 방문객 체험 기획의 필요성을 제시하였다. 그리고 고려 사항으로는 첫째, ‘코끼리 유배지’ 관련 관광 스토리텔링의 진정성과 문화적 감수성의 유지, 둘째, 다양한 매체를 통한 홍보기회를 확대하여 관광객 참여의 폭을 넓히는 게 중요함, 셋째, 장도의 지속가능성 및 환경에 미치는 영향을 반드시 고려해야 한다고 제시했다.

This study aimed to investigate the historical authenticity of the exile of an elephant to Jangdo in Jeolla Province, determine the exact current location of Jangdo, and propose a tourism storytelling development plan centered around the “Elephant Exile Site.” Through a review of related literature, books, journals, previous research, and newspaper articles, the study confirmed the historical authenticity of the event and identified the present location as Jangdo in Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do. The preconditions include: The importance of comprehensive, systematic, and factual historical research, The need for active participation from the local community, and the necessity of visitor infrastructure and experiential programming for tourists. The considerations highlighted were: Maintaining the authenticity and cultural sensitivity of the tourism storytelling related to the “Elephant Exile Site,” Expanding promotional opportunities through diverse media to increase tourist engagement, and Ensuring the sustainability of Jangdo while considering its environmental impact.
