An Ethnographic Research on the Formation Process of the Big Tree Community and the Life of People with Developmental Disabilities

연구목적: 이 연구의 목적은 큰나무 캠프힐에서의 발달장애인의 삶과 공동체 형성과정을 중심으로 큰나무 캠프힐 공동체의 문화를 살펴보는 데 있다. 연구방법: 문화기술지 연구방법으로 1년 동안 참여 관찰과 개별 인터뷰를 통해 자료를 수집하였으며, 정기적으로 연구현장을 방문하여 참여자들의 일상을 기록하였다. 연구결과: 첫째, 성인 장애인이 지역사회 안에서 자립생활을 하려면 그들이 안정적으로 삶을 이어갈 수 있는 자리가 필요하다. 둘째, 큰나무 캠프힐 형성과정은 부모, 교사의 주체적인 노력으로 지역사회에서의 발달장애인의 삶을 준비시키는 역동적인 전환과정이었다. 셋째, 큰나무 캠프힐의 사례는 성인 장애인이 자립생활을 영위하고 지역사회의 일원으로 살아가기 위해서는 이를 지원하고 함께 살아갈 사람들이 필요함을 보여준다. 논의 및 결론: 발달장애인의 자립생활을 지원하려면 안정적인 주거, 고용 그리고 동반자가 필수적이다. 생애 주기 전환에 기반한 공동체 통합 모델과 지원 시스템의 개발이 필요하다.

Purpose: This study aims to explore the process of individuals with developmental disabilities(IDD) and teachers living and working together in the Big Tree Camphill community(BTC) and to understand the meaning of independent living and community formation for IDD. Method: This study applied an ethnographic approach, collecting data through one year of participant observation and individual interviews at the BTC. Results: Independent living for IDD requires a secure environment. The formation of BTC, driven by parents and teachers, effectively prepared individuals with IDD for community life. This case highlights the necessity of support and collaboration within the community to achieve independence. Conclusion: To support independent living for IDD, stable housing, employment, and companionship are essential. Developing a community integration model and establishing a support system based on life cycle transitions are crucial.
