Exploration of Ways to Revitalize Democratic Citizenship Education in schools using the IB MYP Community Project

연구목적: 본 연구는 MYP의 공동체 프로젝트(CP)의 개념 및 구현 사례를 파악하여 실효적인 학교 민주시민교육의 가능성과 과제를 논의하는 데 목적이 있다. 연구방법: 내용분석법과 사례연구방법에 따라 민주시민교육과 CP와의 상관성, CP 운영 과정을 분석하였다. 연구결과: CP는 목표 설정, 계획 수립, 구체적 실천 등 ‘조사’-‘계획’-‘실행’의 3단계를 중심으로 운영되었다. CP의 목적과 전략은 2022 개정 교육과정의 인간상과 교수·학습의 방향, 역량교육을 효과적으로 구현할 수 있으며, 지역사회와 연계한 참여 교육을 강화함으로써 실질적인 민주시민교육을 가능케 하였다. 논의 및 결론: CP는 맥락에 기반한 탐구를 통해 공동체 문제를 해결하고, 시민으로서 사회참여 역할을 수행하게 함으로써 민주시민교육의 실제성을 높이는 효과적인 방안이 될 수 있음을 도출하였다. 다만, CP 과정에 대한 교사의 전문성 강화 방안과 다양한 지원 요구 등은 향후 과제로 제시하였다.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to discuss the possibilities and challenges of effective school democratic citizenship education by identifying the concept and implementation examples of MYP's Community Project (CP). Method: The correlation between democratic citizenship education and CP, and the CP operation process were analyzed according to the content analysis method and case study method. Results: CP was operated around the three stages of 'Investigating', 'Planning' and 'Taking action' such as goal setting, plan establishment, and concrete action. The purpose and strategy of CP was to effectively implement the human image and teaching and learning direction of the 2022 revised curriculum, competency education, and to enable practical democratic citizenship education by strengthening participatory education in connection with local communities. Conclusion: CP was found to be an effective way to improve the practicality of democratic citizenship education by solving community problems through context-based inquiry and playing a role in social participation as a citizen. However, measures to strengthen the teacher's expertise in the CP process and various demands for support were presented as future tasks.
