AI-Led ESG, ESG-Led AI: A Strategic Convergence for Sustainable Transformation

본 연구는 인공지능(AI) 기술과 환경·사회·지배구조(ESG)의 전략적 결합을 통해 기업의 지속 가능한 변화를 이끄는 두 가지 접근법을 제시하고, 각 전략의 강점과 한계를 평가한다. 첫 번째 전략인 'ESG 주도 AI (ESG-led AI)'는 ESG 목표를 설정한 후, 이를 실현할 수 있는 기술적 역량을 구축하고 AI 기술을 전략적으로 활용하는 방식이다. 이 전략은 ESG 목표달성에 집중하여 구체적인 성과를 낼 수 있다는 강점이 있으나, 기술 인프라 구축에 따른 비용 부담과 AI 전문성 부족이라는 한계를 지닌다. 두 번째 전략인 'AI 주도 ESG (AI-led ESG)'는 이미 AI 역량을 확보한 기술 중심 기업이 ESG 원칙을 조직 전반에 내재화하고, 윤리적 운영과 투명한 데이터 관리를 통해 ESG 성과를 창출하는 방식이다. 이 전략은 빠르고 혁신적인 ESG 가치 창출이 가능하다는 장점이 있지만, AI를 활용하는 과정에서 윤리적 리스크와 복잡한 규제 준수가 도전 과제로 부각된다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 중소기업과 스타트업의 특수한 환경을 반영하여 두 전략의 실행 가능성을 이론적 분석과 실제 산업 사례를 통해 비교하고, 기업의 현실적 여건에 맞는 실천적 시사점과 가이드라인을 제시한다. 결론적으로 AI와 ESG의 효과적 통합을 위해서는 명확한 내부 거버넌스 체계 구축, 혁신 지향적 조직문화 조성, 그리고 지속적인 교육과 정부의 정책적 지원이 필수적임을 강조한다.

This study examines how firms can strategically integrate rapidly evolving artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities with growing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) imperatives. Addressing the critical yet understudied challenge of aligning technological innovation with sustainability objectives, we propose two novel frameworks: AI-led ESG, enabling AI-advanced firms to strategically leverage technology for sustainability, and ESG-led AI, guiding resource-constrained SMEs toward incremental AI adoption aligned with ESG goals. Using illustrative cases from manufacturing, molding, and textiles, we demonstrate how strategic AI deployment enhances ESG performance, driving sustainable innovation, competitiveness, and long-term resilience. We further reveal that proactive alignment between ESG and AI not only mitigates sustainability risks but also unlocks previously untapped market opportunities. Ultimately, we emphasize that clear governance, supportive policy contexts, and innovation-oriented cultures are critical for successful ESG-AI integration, providing actionable strategic insights for both theory and practice.
