ESG 활동이 기업 회계적 성과에 미치는 영향 : 텍스트 마이닝을 통한 지속가능경영보고서 분석을 중심으로

The Effect of ESG Efforts on Accounting Performance：Focusing on the Text Mining Analysis of Sustainability Report

[연구목적] 최근 ESG 경영의 사회적 중요성이 높아짐에 따라, 지속가능경영보고서와같은 정성적 데이터를 활용하는 ESG 효과성 분석이 요구되고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는지속가능경영보고서를 텍스트 마이닝하여 ESG 지표를 생성하고, 기업성과에 미치는 영향을 실증하였다. [연구방법] 본 연구는 지속가능경영보고서 중대이슈 중 우선순위가 높은 핵심이슈를활용하여 정성적 요소인 ESG 활동을 계량화 하고, 한국ESG기준원 ESG 평가등급을 기업의 ESG 수준으로 정의하였다. 이러한 ESG 활동이 ESG 수준에 미치는 영향을 이중차분법을 통해 분석하였으며, ESG 활동과 수준이 기업성과에 미치는 영향을 회귀분석의방법으로 실증하였다. [연구결과] 텍스트 마이닝 분석결과 2020년부터 지속가능경영보고서 공시건수가 증가하였으며, 특히 환경과 관련한 핵심이슈 비중이 크게 증가한 것으로 확인되었다. 이는각 기업들이 환경을 우선하는 ESG 트랜드에 대응하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 실증분석 결과 기업의 ESG 활동은 ESG 수준에 유의한 양(＋)의 영향을 미치며, ESG 활동과 수준은기업성과에 유의한 양(＋)의 영향을 미침을 확인할 수 있었다. [연구의 시사점] 본 연구는 ESG 경영의 효과성 실증과 기업들의 ESG 대응 방향 확인에지속가능경영보고서 텍스트 마이닝이 유용한 방법임을 제시하였다. 또한 지속가능경영보고서의 핵심이슈가 회계정보로써 유용한 가치를 지님을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구를시작으로 향후 정성적 요소를 활용하는 ESG 연구가 활발하게 진행되길 기대한다.

[Purpose] As the societal demand for ESG has increased recently, using of qualitative factors is becoming more important for ESG management. This study empirically whether ESG affects financial performance using text data of sustainability report. [Methodology] This study measure ESG efforts using sustainability report and ESG levels using ESG rating by KCGS. We perform empirical analyses while ESG efforts may affects ESG levels by Difference－in－Difference method. And we perform regression analysis using ESG efforts and levels, so reviewed the impact of ESG on financial performance. [Findings] The results of the empirical analysis of this study are as follows. First, the number of sustainability reports disclosed has increased significantly since 2020, and rate of major issues related to environment has incresed. Each company may respond to the ESG trend. ESG efforts measured through text mining of sustainability reports have a significant positive(＋) effect on ESG levels. And ESG efforts and levels have a significant positive(＋) effects on Tobin Q. [Implications] This study suggests that text analysis of sustainability reports is a useful method for verifying the effectiveness of ESG and confirming the direction of corporate ESG management. It also confirms that the major issues of sustainability reports have useful value as accounting information. Based on this study, it is expected that ESG study utilizing qualitative elements will be actively conducted in the future.
