With the further development of globalization, the cultures of various countries are displaying a vibrant and diverse trend. As an important manifestation of linguistic culture, written characters continue to evolve in global communication. In the Sinographic Cultural Sphere, the usage of Japanese and Korean characters varies among different countries. After Chinese characters were formed, they underwent multiple transformations and, upon introduction into countries like Japan and Korea, blended with local cultures. However, in today’s multilingual environment, other writing systems such as kana and Romanization are being increasingly used in Japanese and Korean languages. Chinese characters, which once served as the sole writing system in the ancient Sinographic Cultural Sphere, have gradually lost their former status. Since modern times, there have been debates on whether Chinese characters should be retained or discarded. Among those who support the retention of Chinese characters, there are different views on their future development. The two main points of divergence for the future of Chinese characters are whether to continue using them or completely abandon them, and whether to reduce them further or return to their origins. This paper primarily examines the current status of Chinese character usage within the Sinographic Cultural Sphere, using the languages of Japan and Korea as examples, and explores and analyzes these two issues. The aim is to provide a new perspective for the learning, dissemination, and development of CJK characters and offer insights into cross-cultural exchanges from a linguistic standpoint.
