纽马克交际翻译理论指导下的《一个自由人的崇拜》汉译实践报告

A Report on the Chinese Translation of A Freeman’s Worship Guided by Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory

A Free Man’s Worship is a philosophical essay published by the renowned British philosopher and logician Bertrand Russell in 1903. He depicted his exploration and reflection on the meaning of life in this essay, which is profoundly inspiring. Therefore, this paper aims to convey the charm of this work to Chinese readers through the practice of Chinese translation. Peter Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory emphasizes that translators should focus on the communicative effect and cultural adaptability in the translation process, in order to ensure that the target readers and the source language readers will have a similar or the same reading experience. Therefore, this paper selects this theory as the guidance to analyze translation strategies and methods employed in the process of translating polysemy, semantic rhetorical devices, clauses, and passive voice. Through the practice, this paper finds that Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory can not only help translators better understand the communicative intention and contextual effect of the original text, but also guide translators to adopt appropriate translation strategies or methods to realize the equivalence between the original text and the translated text in terms of meaning, context and style. In addition, this translation practice also improves the translator’s understanding and application of the Communicative Translation Theory, which provides useful reference and material for future translation practice.

《一个自由人的崇拜》（A Free Man’s Worship）是英国著名哲学家、逻辑学家伯特兰·罗素在1903年发表的一篇哲学性文章，描绘了对生命意义的探索与思考，具有深刻的启发意义。因此，本文旨在通过汉译实践，将这部作品的魅力传递给中国读者。纽马克的交际翻译理论注重翻译过程中的交际效果和文化适应性，从而使目标语言读者和源语言读者的阅读体验相似或相同。基于此，本文在该理论的指导下对译文进行具体分析，分别探讨了在处理一词多义、词义修辞格、从句及被动语态时所采用的翻译策略与方法。通过本次翻译实践，本文发现纽马克的交际翻译理论不仅能够帮助译者更好地理解原文的交际意图和语境效果，还能够指导译者采取合适的翻译策略和方法，实现原文与译文在意义、语境和风格上的对等。同时，本次翻译实践也提高了译者对交际翻译理论的认识和应用能力，为今后的翻译实践提供了有益的借鉴和参考。
