A preliminary study on designing a generative AIbased English Linguistics Course

This study explored the integration of generative AI tools into an introductory English linguistics course to foster learner-centered education and enhance student engagement. Twenty-eight Korean college students performed various AI-integrated tasks related to various areas of linguistics. Findings revealed that AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gamma, and Leonardo.Ai enabled students to engage in meaningful activities and practically apply linguistic theories, leading to increased motivation and achievement. Prompt-writing activities further improved students’ English skills and creativity. Despite positive impacts, challenges included decreased creativity, reliability issues, and difficulties in managing AI-generated outputs, especially with video and voice AI tools. Despite limitations in sample size and study duration, this research emphasizes the importance of tailored task design, structured guidance, critical thinking, and digital literacy education. Further studies are needed to investigate the broader educational impacts of generative AI across diverse linguistic and humanities contexts.
