투츠 진스키 작품론 - 필레 드 베르 기법 중심으로

A Study on Works of Toots Zynsky : Focusing on the filet de verre technique

본 연구는 미국의 유리 작가 투츠 진스키(Toots Zynsky, 1951- )의 작품 분석을 통해 작가가 직접 개발한 “필레 드 베르(filet de verre)” 기법을 중심으로 지난 40년간의 작업 변천 과정을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 진스키는 미국 유리예술 발전에 큰 영향을 미치는 작가로 꼽히는 데일 치훌리(Dale Chihuly)의 첫 제자들 중 한 명이며, 치훌리와 그의 다른 제자들과 함께 미국 스튜디오 유리 운동(American studio glass movement)에 참여하고 이를 발전시킨 작가이다. 진스키는 유리라는 매체에 대한 다양한 실험을 계속하면서 자신만의 개성 있는 작업 스타일을 구축했다. 특히 독창적인 작품 표현을 위하여 직접 기계를 제작하여 안정적인 기법 구축을 통해 머리카락처럼 가는 수천 개의 유리실을 뽑아내는 방법으로 40년 넘게 작품을 만들어 왔다. 이렇게 제작된 진스키의 작품은 미국의 메트로폴리탄 미술관(Metropolitan Museum of Art)을 비롯해 전 세계 75개 이상의 미술관과 박물관에 소장되어 있으며, 작품의 독창성과 예술성까지 모두 인정받고 있다. 전통적인 유리 기법에서 벗어나 자신만의 새로운 기법을 개발하고 이를 꾸준히 발전시키고 있다는 점에서 투츠 진스키의 작업은 유리 예술사에서 중요한 의의가 있다. 진스키의 작업은 현대의 유리 작가들에게 의미 있는 메시지를 전달하고 있으며, 진스키의 주요 작품과 예술적 관점에 대한 분석과 고찰이 필요한 시점이다.

This study aims to analyze the works of American glass artist Toots Zynsky(1951- ) to investigate the evolution of her practice over the past 40 years, based on the “filet de verre” technique she developed. Zynsky was one of the first students of Dale Chihuly, who is considered a major influence on the development of American glass, and along with Chihuly and other students, Zynsky is a representative artist who participated in and developed the American studio glass movement. She continued to experiment with the material, creating her own distinctive style of work, building her own machinery to produce the pieces and establishing a steady technique that allowed her to pull thousands of hair-thin glass threads to create a consistent vase-like form. Over the course of 40 years of working with hand-pulled glass threads, Zynsky's works have been collected in more than 75 international museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the United States, and have become recognized for their originality and artistry. Toots Zynsky's work is significant in the history of glass because she broke away from the traditional glass techniques and developed her own new techniques, which she has continued to develop and refine, and sends a new message to contemporary glass artists. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the important works in Zynsky's oeuvre and to reflect on the artist's artistic perspective.
