Morphoprosodic Restrictions in English Truncation

현대문법연구 제125호.jpg

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the structural patterns of English truncations in which morphological and prosodic categories influence on the clipped word formation, and clarify the morphoprosodic restrictions found in monosyllabic and disyllabic truncations through some syllable- or stress-related constraints. The monosyllabic truncated words mostly have a coda and a primary stress syllable in their bases, while the disyllabic truncated words comprise y/ie/o-suffixal forms and trochaic foot structures. The tendency creating these truncatory patterns could be analyzed by morphoprosodic constraints such as[σ]mono, Coda, [σ]#[i/o], or [σ], resulting in finding a generalization that the output categories of truncations denote. This would prove that English truncations can be productive and frequent in terms of empirical investigations relating with morphological processes.
