This study explores the male gaze, returning gaze, and power dynamics in Oryx and Crake and Cinderella. Both Oryx and Cinderella are objectified through the male gaze but subtly assert agency through strategic passivity. They manipulate societal expectations of submissiveness to navigate oppressive systems. The returning gaze becomes a tool of resistance, challenging dominant power structures. Cinderella uses magic to confront her oppressors, while Oryx asserts autonomy through her gaze. Both reject victimization and redefine themselves as active agents. Atwood reimagines the fairy tale to critique gender, class, and political norms. The narratives shift from domination to resistance. Ultimately, both characters subvert traditional roles and reclaim power.
