This study suggests that the limited use of specific tenses-such as the present or past tense-can be attributed to two main factors: the learners’ tendency to transfer L1 expressions into L2 by directly mapping surface-level tense markers during the translation process and a lack of awareness of the semantic differences between the tense and aspect of L1 and L2. To verify these assumptions, a five-step, survey-based study was conducted, yielding the following implications: (1) learners must move beyond direct substitution based on surface-level markers in L1 and instead recognize the importance of pragmatic interpretation within the contexts. (2) There is a need for instructional strategies that help learners consciously distinguish whether an intended L1 expression conveys a present perfect meaning or a simple past meaning before translating it into L2.
