고려-명 관계 악화의 장본인 金義의 행적에 대한 검토

본 논문에서는 고려 말기 명과의 외교 관계에서 중대한 변곡점을 형성한 인물인 김의(金義)의 행적을 추적하였다. 김의는 본래 고려의 관리였으나, 1374년 명의 사신 채빈을 살해하고 북원의 나하추에게로 도망치면서 고려-명 관계를 급격히 악화시키는 원인을 제공하였다. 이후 그는 북원에서 활동하며 심왕 옹립을 도모하였고, 고려 조정은 이를 저지하기 위해 명과의 관계 회복을 적극적으로 추진해야 하는 상황에 직면하게 된다. 이 과정에서 고려는 내부적으로도 친명과 친원의 외교 노선 사이에서 갈등을 겪었으며, 이는 이후 조선 건국까지 지속되는 대외정책의 중요한 배경이 되었다. 김의는 북원에서 활동한 이후 나하추가 명에 항복할 때 함께 귀부하여 명의 장군으로서 남방 정벌에 참여하는 등 파란만장한 삶을 살았다. 그의 행적은 고려 말 동아시아 국제정세의 복잡성을 단적으로 보여주는 사례로, 고려-명-북원 삼각관계 속에서 한 개인의 선택이 국가 간 외교에 얼마나 큰 영향을 미칠 수 있는지를 잘 보여주고 있다. 본 연구는 김의의 활동을 중심으로 고려-명 관계가 악화된 원인과 그 이후 전개된 정세를 분석하였으나, 여전히 보완해야 할 부분은 남아 있을 것이라고 생각된다. 향후 연구에서는 명의 사료나 북원의 기록 등을 추가적으로 분석하여 김의의 활동과 그의 선택이 미친 영향을 더욱 입체적으로 조명할 필요가 있을 것이다. 이를 통해 고려 말기 동아시아 국제관계의 실상을 보다 정밀하게 규명할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

This paper traces the activities of Kim Ui(金義), a figure who played a pivotal role in shaping the diplomatic relations between Goryeo and the Ming dynasty during the late Goryeo period. Originally an official of Goryeo, Kim Ui caused a sharp deterioration in Goryeo-Ming relations when he assassinated the Ming envoy in 1374 and fled to Naγachu of the Northern Yuan. He later engaged in activities within the Northern Yuan, attempting to enthrone Prince Shen(瀋王) to king of Goryeo. As a result, the Goryeo court found itself in a situation where it had to actively seek reconciliation with the Ming dynasty. During this process, internal conflicts arose within Goryeo between factions favoring Ming and those supporting the Northern Yuan, a diplomatic struggle that continued until the founding of the Joseon dynasty. After his activities in the Northern Yuan, Kim Ui eventually defected to the Ming dynasty and participated in military campaigns in the south. His story serves as a striking example of the complexities of East Asian international relations during the late Goryeo period, demonstrating how the choices of a single individual could significantly impact diplomacy between states. This study analyzes the causes of the deterioration in Goryeo-Ming relations and the subsequent developments, focusing on Kim Ui's actions. However, there are still areas that require further research. Future studies should incorporate additional analysis of Ming and Northern Yuan records to provide a more comprehensive understanding of Kim Ui’s activities and their broader implications. Through such efforts, we can more precisely elucidate the reality of East Asian international relations during the late Goryeo period.
