바울의 에게해 선교 전반기에 대한 고찰

The First Half of Aegean Mission of Paul

바울의 2, 3차 선교 활동을 논의할 때 할례당의 공격이 시작되기 이전까지를 통합하여 하나로 보는 것이 바울의 일생을 파악하는 데 유리하다. 이 관점에서 필자는 안티오키아 사건 이후 바울의 선교를 에게해 선교라고 파악하고, 그 가운데 전반기를 고찰하였다. 바울의 에게해 선교는 바울의 진보적인 신학에 근거해서 이루어졌다. 그가 세운 교회들에서 유대인의 율법은 폐지되었고, 유대인 출신과 이방인 출신의 차별은 없었다. 또한 그가 세운 교회에 혼란과 무질서가 관찰되는데, 이는 그가 유대교의 틀을 깨뜨리고 새로운 형태의 교회를 수립하였기 때문이다. 이 점에서 에게해 선교는 그리스도교가 유대교로부터 독립하여 별도의 종교로 발전하는데 있어서 분수령을 이루는 중요한 사건이었다. 그렇지만 그가 세운 교회의 규모가 사도행전에 묘사하고 있는 것처럼 컸던 것은 아니다. 사도행전은 바울이 방문한 도시 주민 전체가 바울에게 큰 관심을 보이고, 수많은 사람이 개종했다고 전한다. 그러나 사도행전은 ‘모든’, ‘많은’이라는 단어를 빈번하게 사용하면서 바울의 선교를 대단히 긍정적으로 묘사하는 편향을 보인다. 따라서 에게해 선교를 파악함에 있어서 사도행전의 과도한 과장을 신뢰해서는 안 된다.

Contrary to common belief, this thesis raised the view that it is better to integrate the second and third missions of Paul as the Aegean mission from the time Paul left Antioch until he conducted missionary work in Ephesus. This is because the criteria for dividing the second and third missions are not clear. Paul’s mission to the Aegean was based on Paul’s progressive theology. There was no discrimination between Jews and Gentiles because the Jewish Law was abolished in his churches. Confusion and disorder are also observed in his churches, because he broke the mold of Judaism and established a new type of church. In this respect, the mission to the Aegean was an important event that marked a watershed moment in the development of Christianity into a separate religion independent of Judaism. However, the size of the church he built was not as large as described in the Acts of the Apostles. The Acts of the Apostles show a bias to describe Paul’s mission in a very positive way by frequently using the words ‘all’ and ‘many’. In fact, in many cases, only about a hundred people converted from each city. Therefore, in grasping the Aegean mission, we should not trust the excessive exaggeration of the Acts of the Apostles.
