고대말 로마의 역사서술 - 에우트로피우스, 『<<간추린 로마사>>』 제2권의 분석

Historical Writing in the Late Antiquity : Analysis on his 2nd Book: Eutropius, <<Breviarium Res Gestae Historicorum Romanorum>>

4세기 로마사의 새로운 서술경향 및 에피소드를 활용하는 방법에 대해 본고에서는 에우트로피우스의 서술에서 제 2권을 가지고 구체적 사례연구를 전개했다. 연구를 위해 취한 2권은 총 28개 장으로 구성되었다. 이 2권을 내용상 세 가지 단계(1-10/11-17/18-27장으로 구분)로 나누어 어떻게 그가 역사기록을 전개했는지를 살펴보았다. 1-10장은 도시국가 로마가 주변 세력들과 경합을 통해 성장해 간 과정이 주된 내용이다. 중반부 이후부터 에피소드를 자주 활용하면서 지루하고 복잡한 정치사적 전개를 흥미롭게 접근토록 유도했고 읽는 자의 집중력을 유지하고자 한 노력이 보인다. 11-17장에서는 피루스 전쟁에 방점을 두고 11-14장을 그 내용으로 꾸몄다. 도합 6가지 에피소드로 정치사의 전개 및 관련된 에피소드를 결부시켜 피루스전쟁 과정에서 나타나는 주목할 사실들을 더욱 자세히 다루었다. 나머지 18-27장은 모두 제1차 포에니 전쟁을 다루는 내용이다. 중간부분인 21, 24, 25장에 한 인물인 레굴루스를 중점적으로 다루면서 교착되는 전쟁을 읽는 단조로움을 극복하고 이후 서술이 신속히 탄력을 받도록 기도한 면을 볼 수 있다.

In order to understand the new tendency and the method of the use of the episodes in the historical writing of the 4th century this paper made a case study with the 2nd book of Eutropius. The 2nd Book of that author is composed of 28 chapters totally. The study has divided those chapters into 3 stages(1st-10th/11th-17th/18th-27th chapters). The first stage shows the progress of the state Rome through the competitions with the neighbor states. From the middle places of the narrative the author uses the episodes many times and seems to try to keep the reader concentrate on reading further under the boring political history. In the 2nd stage the Pyrrhic war is treated mainly with 11th to 14th chapters while even 6 episodes are mixed with the general description on political history. The rest stage from 18th to 27th chapters is wholly related with the First Punic War. The author seems now to focus on one person especially in the exclusively selected chapters with 21th, 24th and 25th. The purpose of it is to overcome the monotonous contents of the war that then began to be in the stalemate, and to bring an accentual tempo in the writing.
