에카르트(A. Eckardt)의 한국학 연구 - 한국 민담을 중심으로

Eckardt’s Study of Korean Studies : with a Focus on Korean Folktales

안드레아스 에카르트(Andreas Eckardt, 1884-1974)는 한국학의 기틀을 세운 독일인 학자로 성 오틸리엔 베네딕트회 수도회 소속의 수도사로 한국에 파견된 인물이다. 에카르트는 한국어와 문법, 역사와 문학, 미술과 음악 등 한국학 분야를 광범위하게 연구하였다. 독일에 귀국 후 에카르트는 한국학 연구 성과를 독일어와 영어 등으로 소개함으로써 20세기 전반 한국의 문화를 서구 사회에 알리는 활동을 하였다. 에카르트는 한국의 민담을 수집하고 독일어로 번역하여 한국문화를 독일에 알린 최초의 한국학 학자라고 할 수 있다. 에카르트는 한국에 체류하는 동안 제주도 한라산부터 백두산에 이르기까지 한국의 민담을 수집하였다. 본 연구에서는 서구 사회에 한국학의 토대를 세우는데 일조한 에카르트의 활동을 규명하고, 에카르트의 모국인 독일 사회의 메르헨 수록의 역사적 배경이 에카르트의 한국 민담 수록에 어떠한 영향을 주었는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 이는 동·서양 문화에서 민담과 각 민족의 정체성 문제를 규명하는데 도움이 되는 연구가 될 것으로 보인다.

Andreas Eckardt(1884-1974) was a German who laid the foundation for Korean studies. Eckardt studied Korean history, literature, art, and music extensively. After returning to Germany, Eckardt introduced the results of Korean studies in German and English. In other words, Eckardt conducted an activity to promote Korean culture to Western society in the first half of the 20th century. Eckardt collected Korean folktales and translated them into German. Eckardt can be said to be the first Korean scholar to promote Korean culture to Germany. During his stay in Korea, Eckardt collected Korean folktales from all over the country. In this study, the activities of Eckardt that helped lay the foundation for Korean studies in Western society were identified. I would like to examine how the historical background of Merhen’s record influenced Eckardt’s Korean folktales.
