비전통적 성인 학습자의 학업중단 및 지속 결정요인: 대학 평생교육 전략을 위한 중요도-수행도 분석

Factors of Academic Dropout and Persistence of Non-traditional Adult Learners: An Importance-Performance Analysis for Lifelong Learning Strategies in University

한국을 비롯한 고령화 사회의 대학들은 비전통적 성인 학습자를 주요 학습 집단으로 인식하고, 이들을 위한 교육환경을 조성하고 있다. 그러나 많은 비전통적 성인 학습자는 현실적인 어려움으로 학업중단을 경험하고 있으므로, 이들이 학업중단 및 지속에 영향을 미치는 핵심 요인을 파악해 효과적인 대학 운영 전략을 수립할 필요가 있다. 본 연구는 중요도-수행도 분석(IPA) 기법을 활용하여 비전통적 성인 학습자의 학업중단 및 지속 요인에 대한 중요도와 수행도를 평가하고, 학업중단 경험 에 따른 하위 집단을 비교하였다. 분석 결과, 학업중단 및 지속 결정요인에 대한 인식 은 집단별로 다르게 나타났다. 학업중단 경험이 있는 학습자와 학업중단을 고려한 학습자는 건강과 시간 관리 등 개인 외적 요인에 대한 요구가 나타났다. 즉 학업을 중단한 적 있는 학습자일수록 개인의 내·외적 요인을 중요하게 인식하였며, 학업중 단 및 지속 결정에 영향을 미쳤다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 학습자를 위한 동기 부여 및 유연한 학습환경 조성이 학업 지속성을 높이는 데 필수적임을 확인하였다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 비전통적 성인 학습자를 위한 맞춤형 지원 방안을 마련하고, 변화하 는 평생교육 환경에 적합한 대학 운영 로드맵을 구축하는 데 기여할 수 있다.

As aging societies, including South Korea, increasingly recognize non-traditional adult learners as a key student demographic, universities are adapting their educational environments to better support these learners. However, many non-traditional adult learners face practical challenges that lead to academic dropout. Therefore, identifying the critical factors influencing academic persistence and dropout is essential for developing effective university management strategies. This study employs the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) method to assess the importance and performance of factors affecting academic persistence and dropout among non-traditional adult learners. Additionally, it compares subgroups based on their dropout experiences. The analysis revealed differences in perception across groups. Learners who had previously dropped out or considered dropping out emphasized external personal factors such as health and time management. In other words, learners with dropout experiences perceived both internal and external personal factors as more critical in their academic decisions. This study confirms that motivation and a flexible learning environment are essential for enhancing academic persistence among non-traditional adult learners. Based on these findings, this research provides tailored support strategies for adult learners and contributes to establishing a university operational roadmap suited to the evolving lifelong education landscape.
