현대중국어 강조구문 ‘要不要’의 구문화 및 구문변화 과정 고찰

A Study on the Constructionalization and Constructional Change of the Emphatic Construction ‘要不要’ in Modern Chinese

본 연구는 현대중국어에서 강조구문으로 사용되는 ‘要不要’의 구문화 및 구문변화 과정을 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. ‘要不要’는 원래 정반의문문의 형식으로 사용되었으나, 점진적인 변화를 거치면서 감탄과 강조의 기능을 가지는 독립적인 구문으로발전하였다. 본 연구는 Traugot, Trousdale (2013)의 구문화(Constructionalization) 및 구문변화(Constructional Change) 이론을 바탕으로, 강조구문 ‘要不要’의 형성과 변화를 분석하였다. 연구 결과 강조구문 ‘要不要’는 (1) 구문화 전 구문변화(Pre-constructional Change) →(2) 구문화(Constructionalization)→(3) 구문화 후 구문변화(Post-constructional Change)의 단계를 거치면서 형성된 것으로 나타났다. 초기에는 선택의문문의 성격을지니고 있었으나, 화자 지향적 ‘要’의 기능이 강화되면서 점차 강조 구문으로 변화하였다. 이후 현대중국어에서 강조, 감탄, 유머, 불만 등의 다양한 화용적 기능을 수행하는 독립적 구문으로 정착하였다. 또한 강조구문 ‘要不要’는 기존의 강조 의문문( ‘怎麼這麼’, ‘爲什麼這麼’)과 결합하여 더 강한 감정적 표현을 가능하게 하였으며, 이는 신흥 강조구문의 발달 과정에서도 중요한 특징으로 분석되었다.

This study aims to examine the process of constructionalization and constructional change of the emphatic construction ‘要不要’ in Modern Chinese. Originally used as a polarity question (选择疑问句), ‘要不要’ gradually underwent linguistic changes and evolved into an independent construction with exclamatory and emphatic functions. This study analyzes the formation and transformation of the ‘要不要’ emphatic construction based on the theoretical framework of Constructionalization and Constructional Change proposed by Traugott, Trousdale (2013). The research findings indicate that the ‘要不要’ emphatic construction has undergone a three-stage developmental process: (1) Pre-constructional Change→(2) Constructionalization→(3) Post-constructional Change. Initially, it retained the characteristics of a polarity question; however, as the speaker-oriented function of ‘要’ became more prominent, the construction gradually shifted toward an emphatic and exclamatory usage. Subsequently, in Modern Chinese, it was fully established as an independent construction that conveys emphasis, exclamation, humor, and complaint in various pragmatic contexts. Additionally, the ‘要不要’ emphatic construction has combined with existing emphatic interrogatives such as ‘怎麼這麼’ (how so) and ‘爲什麼這麼’ (why so), enabling a stronger expression of emotions. This phenomenon represents a crucial characteristic in the developmental process of emerging emphatic constructions in Modern Chinese.
