Hu Shih (胡適) was a prominent Chinese philosopher and scholar of the 20th century, recognized for leading the New Culture Movement and introducing liberalism and individualism to China. Through the Baihua (vernacular) movement, he contributed to mass enlightenment and social reform, playing a crucial role in the development of Chinese society at the time. From 1938 to 1942, Hu Shih served as the Republic of China’s Ambassador to the United States, undertaking diplomatic efforts to counter Japan’s aggression. His key objectives included the revision of the U.S. Neutrality Act, securing financial aid for China, and fostering U.S.-Japan tensions to encourage sanctions against Japan. Leveraging his academic reputation, Hu Shih maintained close communication with American leadership while utilizing his eloquence and persuasive skills to raise awareness of China’s resistance. However, his lack of expertise in international politics and diplomatic affairs, along with his liberal and conciliatory disposition, at times limited his effectiveness as a diplomat.
