본 연구는 영화 <마녀>를 중심으로 테크놀로지로서 생명공학의 의미를 생명정치의 통제 메커니즘의 관점에서 분석하고자 한다. 자윤의 초능력은 유전자 조작과 뇌과학을 결합한 테크놀로지의 산물로서, 이는 테크놀로지가 인간을 관리하고 규율하는 도구임을 시사한다. 자윤의 초능력은 인간의 능력을 강화하거나, 그 한계를 극복하게 할 수 있는 양면성을 갖고 있다. 하지만 자윤의 초능력을 생산하는 테크놀로지는 완벽하게 자율적인 능력을 부여하는 것이 아니라, 관리가 필요한 신체를 만드는 것이다. 자윤의 관리가 필요한 신체의 의미는 다음 두 가지 관점을 통하여 구체화할 수 있다. 첫째는 할리우드 액션 영화와 1980년대 미국 우선주의의 관계를 개념화한 하드 바디이며, 두 번째는 캐서린 헤일즈의 명멸하는 기표이다. 자윤의 신체는 근력, 민첩함 등에 있어 탁월한 능력을 갖고 있지만 할리우드 액션 영화의 하드 바디와는 다르게 남성성, 나아가 국가를 상징하지 않는다. 그의 신체는 하나의 확정적인 의미와 고정되어있지 않은데, 그것은 헤일즈의 명멸하는 기표와 유사하다. 자윤의 소녀 신체는 그 능력과의 불일치에서 기인하는 불안정한 상태 때문에, 규범의 통제에서 벗어날 수 없다. 이것은 자윤의 초능력이 첨단 과학기술의 발전으로 자본주의의 생산과 소비의 영역이 인간 신체로 확장하는 것을 상징하는 기반이 된다. 푸코의 생명정치는 사회적인 질병의 통제와 같은 거시적인 차원의 관리를 의미하면서 동시에 개인 주체성의 영역 안에 자본주의를 지탱하는 자유시장 질서 메커니즘이 내재화하는 것을 뜻한다. 자윤의 불완전하며 관리가 필요한 초능력은 생명공학과 같은 기술의 발전으로 가능해진 기술 자본주의의 역학을 대변한다.

This study aims to analyze the significance of biotechnology as technology through the lens of biopolitical control mechanisms, focusing on the film The Witch: Part 1 - The Subversion. Ja-Yoon’s superhuman abilities, a product of genetic engineering combined with neuroscience, suggest that technology serves as a tool for regulating and managing humans. Her powers embody a duality: they can enhance human capabilities or overcome human limitations. However, the technology that produces Ja-Yoon’s abilities does not grant perfect autonomy but instead creates a body that requires management. The meaning of Ja-Yoon’s body, which requires management, can be articulated through two perspectives. The first is the concept of the “hard body,” which conceptualizes the relationship between Hollywood action films and 1980s American exceptionalism. The second is N. Katherine Hayles’ notion of the “flickering signifier.” While Ja-Yoon’s body possesses exceptional capabilities in terms of strength and agility, it does not symbolize masculinity or state, unlike the hard bodies of Hollywood action films. Her body resists a fixed or definitive meaning, aligning with Hayles’ idea of the flickering signifier. Ja-Yoon’s adolescent body exists in a state of instability, stemming from its dissonance with her abilities, and remains subject to normative control. This implies that Ja-Yoon’s superpowers symbolize the expansion of capitalism’s production and consumption domains into the human body through advancements in cutting-edge science and technology.
