한국형 오컬트 영화의 장르 융합 양상 연구: <곡성>과 <파묘>를 중심으로

A Study on Genre Hybridization in Korean Occult Films: Focusing on The Wailing and Exhuma

본 연구는 한국 오컬트 영화 <곡성>과 <파묘>를 장르 융합의 관점에서 분석하였다. 이를 위해 장르를 일종의 구성성분으로 이해하고, 영화 속에 자리 잡은 장르 요소를 하나씩 해석하는 방식으로 분석을 진행했다. 우선 장르의 관점에서 <곡성>과 <파묘>가 갖는 가장 큰 공통분모는 오컬트 호러이다. 하지만 마지막까지 일관된 오컬트 영화의 공식을 지킨 <파묘>와는 달리, <곡성>의 오컬트 서사는 온전하지는 않으며 일반적인 초자연 호러로 일정 부분 이탈하는 경향을 보인다. 또한 <곡성>에는 미스터리 스릴러와 좀비 영화의 요소가, <파묘>에는 하이스트 무비와 괴수 영화의 요소가 확인되었다. <곡성>의 좀비 요소와 <파묘>의 하이스트 요소는 영화 전반에 조화롭게 분산되어 있다. 반면 <곡성>의 미스터리 스릴러는 전반부에 강조되면서 후반부의 오컬트와 대비되는 구도를 이룬다. 한편 <파묘>는 <곡성>과는 다른 방식으로 전반부와 후반부를 나눈다. <파묘> 속 괴수 영화의 요소는 후반부에만 등장한다. <파묘>의 괴수 요소가 오컬트 요소를 약화하지 않고 잘 융합된 것에 비해, 미스터리 스릴러가 지배적인 <곡성>의 전반부에는 오컬트 요소가 희미하게 나타난다. 본 연구는 이처럼 <곡성>과 <파묘>의 핵심적 차이점이 장르적 구성성분의 차이에서 발생한다는 점을 밝혀냈다.

This study analyzes the Korean occult films The Wailing and Exhuma from the perspective of genre hybridization. We understand genres as components and interpret existing genre elements in two films. First of all, both films are occult horror movies. However, while the occult horror narrative in The Wailing collapses and shifts into general supernatural horror by the end, Exhuma remains a complete occult horror movie. Additionally, elements of mystery thriller and zombie films are found in The Wailing, while elements of heist films and monster movies are identified in Exhuma. The zombie elements in The Wailing and the heist elements in Exhuma are seamlessly integrated throughout the films. On the other hand, the mystery thriller in The Wailing is emphasized in the first half, creating a contrast with the occult elements in the latter half. Meanwhile, Exhuma divides the first and second halves differently; the monster movie elements in Exhuma appear only in the latter half. The monster elements in Exhuma are well integrated without diminishing the occult aspects, whereas the occult elements are relatively sparse in the predominantly mystery thriller-driven first half of The Wailing. The results show that the occult components in The Wailing are significantly less than those in Exhuma. This study reveals that the core difference between The Wailing and Exhuma arises from the variations in their genre components
