Challenges and Possibilities Brought by the Use of AI in Documentaries: Focusing on the Opening Film of IDFA <About a Hero> (2024)

AI를 메인 컨셉으로 삼은 <About a Hero>(2024)는 AI 기술을 활용해 허구적 이야기를 다큐멘터리 형식 안에 삽입함으로써 기존 다큐멘터리 분류체계에 문제를 야기한다. 본 연구는 이 작품이 과연 다큐멘터리로 분류될 수 있는지, 그리고 이 같은 AI의 활용이 전통적 다큐멘터리 양식에 어떤 변화를 가져오는지 탐구한다. 빌 니콜스의 다큐멘터리 이론을 바탕으로 제작자, 텍스트, 관객의 관점에서 종합적으로 분석한 결과, 이 작품은 텍스트만을 표면적으로 보면 픽션이나 모크 다큐멘터리로 오인될 수 있으나, 제작자의 의도가 패러디나 장르 비판에 있는 것이 아니라 AI를 활용한 실제적 예술 실험의 결과물을 제시하는 데 있다는 점, 관객 역시 이를 단순한 허구가 아닌 현실의 실험으로 인식한다는 점에서 다큐멘터리로 봐야 한다고 주장한다. 더욱이 작품에 포함된 AI에 관한 실제 전문가 인터뷰는 작품의 주장(argument)을 개진하는 데 사용되고 있기 때문에 본 작품의 다큐멘터리적 성격을 강화해 준다. 이러한 분석을 통해 본 연구는 <About a Hero>를 AI 기술을 활용한 창작 과정에 대해 성찰을 촉구하는 성찰적 다큐멘터리로 해석한다. 기존 성찰적 다큐멘터리가 주로 인터뷰, 내레이션, 아카이브 영상 등 표현 기법에 대한 고찰을 중심으로 했다면, 이 작품은 AI가 생성한 이미지와 사운드 자체의 진실성과 의미까지 재검토하며 성찰의 범위를 확장한다. 그리고 이는 이미지 소비 방식 전반에 관한 관객의 비판적 사고를 촉구한다. 또한 본 연구에서는 <About a Hero>가 성찰적 다큐멘터리임과 동시에 수행적 성격을 보인다는 점을 짚으며 AI로 인한 수행성의 변화를 분석한다. 본 글에서는 Kaspar가 만든 영화 안 영화를 AI의 수행적 요소로 해석한다. 특히 AI가 생성한 헤어조크적 스토리텔링과 딥페이크 기술로 구현된 헤어조크 캐릭터는 기계가 주체가 되어 수행성을 확장시킨 사례다. 이러한 비인간 주체로의 수행적 양식의 확장은 다양하고 새로운 스토리텔링을 가능하게 한다. 끝으로 AI가 생성하는 비논리적 결과나 예기치 않은 상상력을 단순한 기술적 오류로 치부하기보다는 AI 창작의 고유한 미학적 특성으로 이해할 필요가 있다. 이러한 현상이 과도기적일 가능성도 있지만, 인간 중심의 창의성 기준을 넘어서 기계가 제시하는 새로운 결과물에 대한 탐구가 이어져야 하며, AI와 인간의 협업 가능성을 모색하는 작업에 대한 비판적 연구도 지속되어야 한다.

Centered around the concept of AI, About a Hero (2024) challenges conventional documentary classification by incorporating fictional narratives into a documentary framework through AI technology. This paper examines whether the work can indeed be classified as a documentary and how the use of AI reshapes traditional documentary conventions. Drawing on Bill Nichols’ documentary theory, a comprehensive analysis from the perspectives of creators, texts, and audiences reveals that while the film’s text may superficially resemble fiction or mock documentary, it is difficult to categorize as such. This is due to the director’s intent, which is not parody or genre critique but showcasing an artistic experiment utilizing AI, as well as the audience’s perception of the work not as mere fiction but as a real-world experiment. Additionally, the inclusion of expert interviews within the film strengthens its position as a documentary. Based on this analysis, this study interprets About a Hero as a reflexive documentary that critically examines the creative process enabled by AI technology. While traditional reflexive documentaries have primarily focused on reflecting on expressive techniques such as interviews, narration, and archival footage, this work expands the scope of reflexivity by reevaluating the authenticity and meaning of AI-generated images and sounds. In doing so, it prompts audiences to engage in critical thinking about their overall consumption of images. Furthermore, this study highlights how About a Hero possesses a performative dimension in addition to its reflexive nature, analyzing shifts in performativity caused by AI. The film-within-a-film created by AI Kaspar may seem foreign to the documentary form, yet this study interprets it as an example of AI-driven performativity. Specifically, the AI-generated Herzogian storytelling and deepfake-implemented Herzog character exemplify an expansion of performativity, with the machine itself becoming an agent. This extension of performative modes to non-human subjects allows for diverse and novel storytelling possibilities. Rather than dismissing AI-generated illogical results or unexpected imagination as mere technical errors, it is necessary to recognize them as distinct aesthetic characteristics of AI creation. While this phenomenon may be transitional, ongoing critical research should explore new outcomes presented by machines beyond human-centered creativity and investigate the collaborative possibilities between AI and humans
