This study discusses the teaching of aesthetic sensitivity as a sub-competency for achieving English communicative competence, which is the goal of the 2022 revised English language curriculum. In particular, this study discusses points for using English narrative texts, such as Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964), in the classroom. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory uses the narrative structure of a fairy tale to develop reward and punishment themes. The novel features four naughty modern children and well-mannered Charlie. The children’s tour of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory is a unique experience in which their morality is evaluated and rewarded. Readers are encouraged to observe the characters’ cultures with an open mind and reflect on their own based on the punishments they receive. Readers may empathize with a good protagonist’s morality and its consequences as well as develop aesthetic sensibilities while forming cultural sensitivities. Through frequent exposure to lessons utilizing English narrative texts, students can develop their sensitivity competencies to enjoy quality lives and happiness.
