고전문학에서 활용된 ‘삼매’의 양상에 대해서

Aspects of ‘Samādhi’ Utilized in Classical Literature

이 논문에서는 고전문학에 나타난 ‘삼매’라는 용어의 활용 양상을 초기불교의 교리와 수행법에 기반해서 분석했다. 이를 위해 초기불교 경전과 현대 삼매 수행자들의 설명을 참고해서 삼매의 실체를 파악하고, 한국고전종합DB에서 추출한 164건의 용례를 바탕으로 고전문학에서의 삼매 활용 양상을 살펴보았다. 고전문학에서 ‘삼매’는 불교 본연의 의미로 사용된 경우(50건)보다 비유적으로 사용된 경우(114건)가 훨씬 많았다. 특히 예술적 경지나 기량을 비유하는 데 ‘삼매’가 활발하게 사용되었으며, 이는 문인들이 삼매의 깊은 몰입과 집중이라는 특징을 예술 활동의 뛰어남을 표현하는 데 효과적으로 활용했음을 보여준다. 그 외 학문･인품･강연･독서 등에서 ‘삼매’는 해당 부문의 뛰어난 경지나 몰입을 나타내는 비유적 표현으로 사용되었다. 이는 불교가 한국 문화에 깊숙이 자리 잡으면서, 불교 용어인 ‘삼매’가 본래의 종교적 의미를 넘어 일상생활과 예술 영역에서도 다양하게 활용되었음을 의미한다. 문인들은 ‘삼매’라는 용어가 지닌 깊이와 신비로움을 활용해서 자신들의 예술적 영감과 창작 활동을 고양시키고, 독자들에게 더욱 생생하고 강렬한 인상을 전달하고자 했던 것으로 보인다. 이 연구는 한국고전종합DB에 국한된 자료를 바탕으로 진행되었으며, 모든 고전문학 작품을 포괄하지 못한다는 한계가 있다. 하지만 기존 연구에서 접근하기 어려웠던 삼매에 대해 초기불교의 경전과 수행법을 이용해서 그 의미를 파악하고 문학적인 분석을 시도한 점은 이 논문의 장점이라고 할 수 있다. 이와 같이 우리 문학에 나타난 불교적인 내용을 초기불교 경전과 수행법을 이용해서 분석한다면 불교의 기본 개념에 좀 더 가까운 문학적 해석이 가능할 것으로 기대한다.

This paper analyzes the utilization of the term ‘Samādhi’ in classical literature, based on the doctrines and practices of Early Buddhism. To achieve this, it elucidates the nature of samādhi by referencing Early Buddhist scriptures and explanations from contemporary Samādhi practitioners, and explores the aspects of Samādhi's utilization in classical literature using 164 examples extracted from the Korean Classical Literature Database. In classical literature, ‘Samādhi’ was used more often metaphorically (114 cases) than in its doctrinal Buddhist sense (50 cases). In particular, ‘Samādhi’ was actively used to describe artistic states or skills, reflecting how writers effectively utilized Samādhi's characteristics of deep immersion and concentration to express excellence in artistic activities. In addition, in areas such as scholarship, character, lecturing, and reading, ‘Samādhi’ was used as a metaphorical expression to denote an exceptional state or deep immersion in the respective domain. This indicates that as Buddhism became deeply rooted in Korean culture, the Buddhist term ‘Samādhi’ was utilized in everyday life and the artistic realm, beyond its original religious meaning. Writers seem to have borrowed the depth and mystery of the term ‘Samādhi’ to enhance their artistic inspiration and creative activities, and to convey a more vivid and powerful impression to readers. This study was limited to materials from the Database of Korean Classics and does not encompass all classical literary works. However, one of the strengths of this paper is its attempt to understand the meaning of Samādhi using early Buddhist scriptures and meditation methods, and to conduct a literary analysis on a topic that was difficult to approach in previous research. Similarly, if we analyze Buddhist content in Korean literature using early Buddhist scriptures and meditation techniques, we can expect to achieve a literary analysis closer to the fundamental concepts of Buddhism.
