A Study on Cadets’ Job Competencies and Improvement Measures for Onboard Training from the Perspective of Merchant Marine Officers

The purpose of this study is to diagnose the current job competencies of maritime cadets from the perspective of active maritime officers and propose practical measures for improving onboard training. Using qualitative research methods, in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven maritime officers holding diverse ranks and levels of experience. Thematic analysis was employed for data interpretation. The results revealed several key competency issues among cadets, including passive work attitudes, gaps between theoretical knowledge and practical application, inadequate basic safety awareness, intergenerational communication difficulties, and structural limitations within the onboard training system. Maritime officers recommended strengthening educational programs to foster proactive attitudes and responsibility, developing field-oriented customized training curricula, improving assessment methods by expanding qualitative evaluations, creating flexible working environments, enhancing intergenerational communication training, and reinforcing educational programs on advanced maritime technologies. This study provides valuable implications for enhancing the quality of onboard training and contributes to the development of competent maritime professionals required in the shipping industry.
