Objectives: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate weight changes and adverse events during obesity treatment using Gamitaeeumjowee-tang in overweight and obese patients diagnosed with depression and taking medication. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on overweight and obese patients diagnosed with depression and taking related medication, who participated in a 12-week weight loss program using Gamitaeeumjowee-tang. The evaluation included changes in body weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), fat mass, and body fat percentage. The proportion of patients who lost more than 5% and 10% of their initial weight was calculated. Adverse events were evaluated according to severity, causality, and system-organ classes. Results: 35 subjects were included (mean±SD, weight 73.32±11.54 kg, BMI 28.35±3.40 kg/m2). The average weight loss was 5.68±3.13 kg and the average weight loss rate was 7.69±4.15%. The percentage of patients who lost more than 5% and more than 10% of their weight compared to their baseline weight was 77.1% and 31.4%, respectively. All adverse events were mild or moderate, and none were severe. According to system-organ classes, gastrointestinal and neuropsychiatric symptoms accounted for the majority, and insomnia, palpitation, and hyperhidrosis were frequent. Conclusions: Korean medicine obesity treatment using Gamitaeeumjowee-tang for overweight and obese patients diagnosed with depression and taking related medications showed a significant weight loss effect without any serious adverse events.
