Purpose - This study investigates the effects of knowledge sharing and external knowledge search on the barriers of new business development. Most SMEs actively pursue technological innovation or new business for their sustainable survival and growth, but they are unable to effectively utilize new business opportunities due to various obstacles they face in the process of technological innovation or new business. Existing studies have studied the impact of external knowledge search and knowledge sharing on innovation activities separately, but they fail to consider both factors simultaneously. This study examines the impact of external knowledge search and knowledge sharing on innovation with the moderating effect of the firms listed on the KOSDAQ market. Design/methodology/approach - This study collected data from a survey on 223 SMEs in Korea and investigate research hypotheses by empirical analysis. Findings - The results show that a higher level of knowledge sharing mitigates the internal and external obstacles faced by firms in pursuing new businesses. On the other hand, the higher the level of external knowledge search, the greater the perceived internal and external obstacles to new business development. In the case of publicly traded firms, knowledge sharing and external knowledge exploration strengthen the relationships with internal organizational barriers. Research implications or Originality - This paper investigates the diverse relationships of knowledge sharing and external knowledge with new business development.
