Purpose - Venture firms are widely regarded as the “engines of innovation” driving the growth of the Korean economy, making the development of an advanced intellectual property (IP) strategy crucial for their success. However, despite the growing importance of intellectual property, there remains a lack of comprehensive research examining the relationship between venture firms and IP. As a result, the role of intellectual property in contributing to the business performance of venture firms has yet to be clearly defined. Design/methodology/approach - This study aims to analyze the impact of patents and trademarks on the business performance of venture firms and to quantitatively examine the interaction between these two types of intellectual property. Findings - The results show that both patents and trademarks positively influence the business performance of Korean venture firms. Patents enhance sales by driving demand for innovative products and also improve operating income by providing a competitive edge. Similarly, trademarks contribute to both sales by boosting brand recognition and operating income by fostering consumer trust and loyalty. Furthermore, patents and trademarks have a mutually partial mediating effect, amplifying their combined impact on business performance. Research implications or Originality - From a corporate standpoint, the findings underscore the importance of strategically utilizing intellectual property to strengthen competitive advantage and improve overall business performance. This indicates the necessity for targeted policy support to promote IP-based management practices within venture firms.
