The Survey and Development Process of the Shifo Railway (Including the Kunyu Railway)

During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Yunnan held a strategically vital position. It served not only as China’s major rear area for the war effort and a crucial hub for Allied aid to China but also as a frontline of the China-Burma-India battlefield. This period saw a peak in railway planning, surveying, and construction activities, giving rise to proposals for the construction of the Yunnan-Burma Railway, the Sichuan-Yunnan Railway, the Shifo Railway, the Kunyu Railway, and others. By reviewing existing historical documents and archives, this study clarifies the planning and surveying process of the Shifo Railway (including the Kunyu Railway). This contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the urgent desire among Yunnan's officials and merchants in modern times to improve the province’s transportation infrastructure, as well as the significant role railways played in Yunnan’s economic and social development. The findings also provide insights for the steady advancement of today’s Belt and Road Initiative and the construction of a railway network that connects to South and Southeast Asia.

抗战时期,云南地缘战略地位突出,既是中国抗战的大后方和盟国援华物资的重要集散地,又是中缅印战场的前沿阵地,铁路规划、勘测、修筑活动达到一个顶峰,遂有滇缅铁路、川滇铁路、石佛铁路、昆玉铁路等铁路修筑倡议的兴起。通过梳理现有历史文献和档案,厘清石佛铁路(含昆玉铁路)的规划和勘测始末,有助于我们全面理解近代云南官商改善云南交通状况的迫切愿望和铁路之于云南经济社会发展的特殊作用,对于我们今天稳步推进“一带一路”倡议、构建辐射南亚东南亚铁路网也有启示意义。
