This study focused on the necessity of indirect communication methods that can induce social contact in public places. Its main purpose was to clarify the design characteristics of 'in-between space' and explore the possibility of applying them to public design. First, the conceptual foundation of the study was established through theoretical concepts and a review of previous studies on in-between space. Interstitial space has overlapping characteristics where public and private use occur simultaneously in public space, and this study analysed it by limiting it to the area of private scope adjacent to the city's street space. Afterwards, based on the characteristics of the interstitial space derived, it was examined based on three analysis frameworks: physical characteristics, user behaviour, and indirect communication methods. By analysing three cases, including demolished house sites, it attempted to convert design elements reflecting the characteristics of in-between space into practical design mediation. By synthesising these design characteristics and elements, this study suggested the possibility that space can act as a place for public design that mediates emotional empathy and interpretive experience beyond simple physical function. This has significance as basic data for exploring the possibility of practical expansion of indirect communication and emotion-based design in future public design research.
