A Study on Transparent Resin Objects Using the Form of Urethane Foam : Focusing on the Contrast Between Organic Surfaces and Geometric Planes

This study explores the visual contrast between organic surfaces and geometric planes by utilizing polyurethane foam and transparent epoxy resin. The aim is to expand the viewer’s sensory experience by allowing visibility into both the interior and exterior of the sculptural object through transparency. Polyurethane foam is used to generate irregular, intuitive forms that serve as the prototype, while the transparent epoxy resin captures and solidifies the contrasting relationship between fluid surfaces and rigid planes. Through experimental processes including mold-making and resin casting, the study examines how the properties of each material contribute to visual and structural outcomes. The use of layered silicone molds and recycled shell materials ensures form accuracy and mold stability. A multi-stage resin casting technique was employed to prevent deformation and achieve optical clarity, while polishing emphasized the contrast between surface types. The final object demonstrates the potential of transparent materials in expressing the interplay between form, texture, and light. This research offers practical insights into material usage and fabrication techniques that may be applied in formative art practices and object-based design.
